BC government seeks public input on cosmetic chemical pesticides

Join the Canadian Cancer Society in asking the government to protect all British Columbians and ban the sale and use of cosmetic chemical pesticides by 2011. Integrated Pest Management (IPM), or the use of pesticides ‘as a last resort’ to deal with weeds and insects, should not be included in cosmetic pesticide legislation.

Cosmetic Pesticides and other Cancer-Causing Substances in the Environment
You have the right to know if you're exposed to cancer-causing substances. Let's reduce cosmetic pesticide use, call for Right to Know (product labelling) legislation and make informed decisions about products we buy/use, especially around children.

Tobacco Control—A Smoke-Free BC for our Children
Smoking remains the #1 preventable cause of death and disease killing up to 6,000 British Columbians each year. Second-hand smoke can cause childhood cancers and asthma. Let's increase tobacco control measures to reduce tobacco use and exposure to second-hand smoke.

Protect Children and Youth from Excessive UV Radiation
Sun exposure in moderation can have health benefits enabling the body to make Vitamin D. However, excessive UV radiation from the sun or tanning equipment can cause skin cancer. Let's ensure children have enough shade where they play and youth under 18 are prevented from using artificial tanning equipment.

Reduce Differences between Most and Least Healthy
Families living in poverty have fewer opportunities to participate in regular exercise and maintain a healthy diet. Let's address poverty and create better access for all to healthy foods and activities that help reduce the burden of cancer and other chronic diseases which are straining the health care system.

To improve the health of children, urgently reduce the burden of cancer and other chronic diseases facing families, and ensure the health care system is sustainable, the Canadian Cancer Society is calling on all political parties to make a commitment to 4 priorities:

1) Increase tobacco control measures
2) Reduce exposure to environmental carcinogens
3) Protect youth from excess UV radiation
4) Reduce health inequities
